What Is the prostate?

The prostate gland is a part of the male reproductive system. It is typically described as a walnut sized organ which is located deep in the pelvis below the base of the bladder. The gland surrounds the urethra, the channel through which the urine passes out of the bladder. It is this close association with the urinary system that often brings the prostate gland to the attention of men.

What does the prostate do?

The exact function of the prostate is not well understood. The gland contributes fluid to the final mix of seminal fluid. The fluid helps to transport sperm during reproduction as well as reduce the acidity of the vagina. The prostate gland may also have or have had an immunologic role during human development. As men age, the prostate becomes one of the more troublesome and trouble prone spots in the body. The problems associated with the prostate can best be broken down into two categories:

Benign non - cancerous
Malignant cancerous
