PROSTIVA / Transurethral Needle Ablation of Prostate (TUNA)

The Prostiva procedure is indicated for the treatment of symptoms due to urinary outflow obstruction secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostiva is a minimally invasive treatment done in an out-patient or in-office setting. The procedure may be performed using a local anesthetic. During the procedure, a specially designed Prostiva catheter is inserted through the penis to the level of the prostate. Two very small needles are inserted into the prostate and a low level of radiofrequency energy is applied. The energy heats the prostate tissue and shrinks it. The tissue damage is confined to a well defined area, protecting all of the adjacent structures from harm. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the Prostiva system provides significant improvement in uroflow and AUA Symptom scores as well as rapid improvement in quality of life scores. Side effects are minimized as compared to traditional methods of treatment (ie: the TransUrethral Resection of the Prostate or TURP).Prostiva reduces or eliminates the need for medications such as Hytrin, Cardura, Flomax, Proscar or Avodart. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the Prostiva procedure, no hospital stay is usually required and the patient can resume normal activities within a short period of time.
